INTRODUCTION

This tailored one day training provides students with the understanding and skills to effectively use Visual Studio 2017 to create and manage automated functional UI testing in the application lifecycle for a team-based environment. The training focuses on teaching students how to leverage techniques and features to enhance quality within Visual Studio Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) 2017. This course covers a broad range of topics to help students become familiar with the capabilities of the Visual Studio ALM platform.

Test Lead, Test Engineer, Development Lead, Developer, Release Manager

Visual Studio ALM 2017

  • Understand how to create and maintain effective Coded UI tests

PREREQUISITES

Before attending this course, students must have experience in a team-based application lifecycle. The following prerequisites are expected:

  • Have played one or more roles in ALM
  • Be familiar with at least one development methodology
  • Understand Microsoft Office basics
  • Understand basic techniques for Functional UI testing

Visual Studio 2017 Automated UI Testing Overview

This module introduces the components and functionality of Visual Studio 2017 for Functional Automated UI Testing to provide support for ALM.

The following capabilities will be covered:

  • Overview of Visual Studio ALM technologies and basic architecture
  • Overview of Work Item Tracking
  • Overview of Source Control
  • Overview of Automated Build
  • Overview of Manual/Automated Testing
  • Overview of SharePoint Reporting

Anatomy of Coded UI

This module will help students understand all the technology components required to record and maintain a Microsoft Coded UI test. The Coded UI technology is made up of many technology parts that can accelerate and offer maintainability for Coded UI tests.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Visual Studio Coded UI Test recorder (CUIT)
  • Creating tests and UI Maps
  • Overview of uimap file
  • Using methods to represent actions
  • Adding UI elements to the UI Map
  • Adding UI assertions using the CUIT tool

Build and Maintain a UI Map

This module will help students understand how to use the UI map technology to create and maintain Coded UI Tests. This module will help students leverage the UI Map to accelerate and maintain Coed UI Tests.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Overview of UI map file
  • Create a UI map file using CUIT
  • Add Actions and Elements to UI map file
  • Validate UI elements in a UI Map file

Creating maintainable tests using the UI Map

This module will help students understand how to leverage best practice and the UI map to create maintainable tests. This module will focus on real world best practice to create sustainable and maintainable Coded UI tests.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Overview of best practice for using UI map and Coded UI
  • Creating actions and elements
  • Compose Coded UI test by generating methods
  • Using the Arrange, Assign and Assert methodology to create tests

Creating Data-Driven Tests

This module will help students understand how to use data to drive Coded UI tests. This module will show students how to use data sources to provide data to automated Coded UI test cases.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Understand data-driven Coded UI testing
  • Understand the data sources for Coded UI tests
  • Mapping data sources using attributes
  • Using the TestContext to retrieve data
